News from the Southbroom Ratepayers Association
Our water team have been liaising with UGU on a regular basis regarding the
crisis they have on their hands due to the severe drought causing salt water
to back up river to the processing plant. Currently the areas from Ramsgate
to Port Shepstone are experiencing very salty tap water.
Southbroom is fortunate that our supply comes from the Umtumvuma river
which is currently not under threat. UGU are therefore utilising water from
Southbroom and further south to supply drinking water to the areas north of
us.
UGU acknowledge that a mistake was made in not anticipating this problem
but are now doing everything possible to rectify the situation, a new pump
will be installed higher up the Umzimkulu river and they are hopeful that the
situation will be resolved by latest next Tuesday.
Whilst there is no need for Southbroom residents to panic or concern
themselves about UGU utilising water from our area to supply others, we
must all be aware they we are undergoing a severe drought. We must ensure
that we conserve water and make contingency plans in the event that there
are shortages in the future.
Let us all work together as a community and help our neighbours through this
crisis.
In short Ladies & Gentleman please use this precious commodity with great care & respect.
